/6 Every time I go to a caucus in Boulder I am treated with joy and wonder like I’m a special unicorn for being youngish and involved. People say they wish more young people were there. They offer to give me a chance to go to county/state if I’m free. I’m 32. #Boulder
/6 Maybe the reason more young people aren’t involved is because their voice is considered irrelevant in local matters by city council and other leaders because they “don’t have a long term stake in the city” because they are renters and/or more recent arrivals.
/6 I’m 32, well-educated, and most of my friends don’t own homes unless they had serious financial help from parents. That’s not just in Boulder, that’s everywhere around the country.
/6 If you want young people to be involved and vote, but don’t want to listen to renters and students in your own community, you need to sit with that and think about the contradictions there.
/6 Boulder is the only city I live in. I cannot live in more than one. If I am to be involved in local politics, it will be here. As a renter here for 5 years, I have as much right to participate and be heard by my city council as a homeowner who has been here 20+ years.
/6 Boulder City Council needs to listen to their whole community and not just act like the Boulder HOA. You aren’t being bullied...you’re just seeing effective organizing in your community and being asked to heed the wishes of a significant # of your constituents.
