The shooter at my high school was a white supremacist.

The shooter in El Paso was a white supremacist.

One of the top predictors for where gun violence occurs the most is where communities were redlined in the 20th century.

Gun violence is a racial justice issue.
To end gun violence we can’t only talk about the gun laws we have to talk about why communities are so affected by gun violence to begin with.

Hint - it’s not because they don’t have enough police it’s because they don’t have enough resources.
In addition to gun laws we need to talk about systemic racism, poverty and militarism.

We need to talk about food deserts, affordable housing, Job training,
restorative justice and a new approach to public safety that is not rooted in slavery as our modern policing system is.
The only reason why I know this is because of reading books and especially because of groups like @GKMC18 @LIFECampInc @CJACTIONFUND @BeBraveChicago
And friends like @thethandi_way all of whom have contributed so much to the Gun Violance Prevention movement way before MFOL.
It’s also an issue of poverty given that 2/3 of gun deaths are suicides that predominantly happen in parts of Rural America that often don’t have enough resources, have weak laws, And a severe lack of economic mobility.
Mental health does have to do with gun violence however we should not use it as an excuse for why racist white supremacist commit mass shootings.
Racism is not a mental health issue.
And when we only talk about mental health in regard to a mass shooter we stigmatize it.
If we wanna talk about mental health we should talk about the trauma that communities affected by gun violence on a daily basis go through and how the retaliation to gun violence plays into more deaths.

That’s why hospital based violence intervention programs are so vital.
2/3 of gun deaths are suicides a predominantly older white men in America Often driven by lack of mental health resources, stigmatization and lack of economic mobility. Gun laws like waiting periods can help here but they also need to be supported by states giving more funding
To suicide prevention and mental health programs for people sadly whenever people push for that however they call it socialism.
Even if you disagree with me on everything I say about guns and you believe this truly is a mental health / resources issue don’t just leave your snarky comment and leave you should go out and advocate for more mental health funding and resources.
