This whole situation is still deeply unsettling to me. While I see their willingness to learn and steps to do so, they adopted a black child seemingly after doing next to zero research on black culture and the black experience in this country, and that's troubling. https://twitter.com/ryan_s_clark/status/1291011406830006273
I have absolutely NO problem with interracial adoption. I just want people to know exactly what that means and what they are getting themselves and their child into. I've known adoptees who have struggled because their parents are ill-equipped to help navigate certain issues.
Interracial adoption can present unique challenges and that's something people should be preparing themselves for beforehand, especially if their child is old enough to be socializing on their own.
This isn't me necessarily trying to knock the Slavins. From the sounds of it they're invested in doing the work here. It's just that so many parents walk into this eyes closed then have to try to play catch up, and it's not easy for them or their kid.
