thread on the situation in kashmir and why people are using the red pfp
the state of jammu and kashmir is a province located between india, pakistan and china. kashmir, along with other indian states used to be an independent territory for very long.
when india gained independence in 1947, the kashmiri kingdom agreed to be a part of india with the right to self govern and have a special constitution under article 370 of the indian constitution.
on august 5th 2019 this special status was revoked and to avoid and lessen any visible backlash, the indian government shut down ALL FORMS of communication in kashmir- telephones, internet etc.

when protests took place, the basic human rights of thousands were violated. ranging from mass killing to social oppression, all was done to shut down the voices.
currently the state has an acute shortage of facilities. there is 1 ventilator for every 71,000 people and 1 armed soldier for every 9 people.
#RedForKashmir is a campaign to raise awarness about the issue because most petitions do not work there. that's why your tl might have a lot of users with red pfps.
i have the privledges and access to internet and everything along those lines, and i can in no way speak for the kashmiri people or on whether the revoking of the article was correct or not. all i ask for is for people to be treated like humans without argument.
some information might not be accurate, but at the heart of it, ultimately all we indians with for is the safety of our citizens in kashmir. it's been a year since this happened, and people have lived there without having contacted their family for more than 400 days now.
ANY form of support for kashmiris is appreciated. today marks one year of the shutdown of the state. kashmiris had all their rights taken away from them, countless of them could not even survive the lockdown. please support them by RAISING AWARENESS or by donating.
an argument which began with the discussion of the pros and cons of the abolishment of article 370 lead to a whole year of pain for every single kashmiri. politics end where lives are at risk.
