It’s #NationalUnderwearDay, an opportunity for @TSA to reflect back to Christmas 2009 when a terrorist on an airplane flying to Detroit attempted to detonate an explosive device that he had concealed in his underwear. Fortunately, it did not work as designed. 1/4
TSA conducts an "Explosives and Explosive Effects" class for its officers to train how to recognize explosives and their components to help them do their jobs better. The class goes to a range where explosives built replicate actual terrorist-designed bombs are detonated. 2/4
The explosives at the range are designed to mimic real ones (i.e., an underwear bomb, letter bomb, laptop bomb) so TSA officers can more fully grasp the damage that a variety of explosive devices cause. 3/4
The photos show a replica of the actual 2009 underwear bomb and what happens when detonated. It’s a jarring reminder as to the vital importance of the job that TSA officers do to protect the traveling public every day. 4/4
