Once upon a time (the 2000s,) the USPS was not only self-funded requiring NO taxpayer funds to operate, but also made BILLIONS of dollars in Government "profit"which they call surplus.

Actually a model of government efficiency.

The GOP couldn't have that.

So they invented a scheme to burden the USPS with so much debt that it would suddenly depend on taxpayers to survive.

And then they could paint it as a drain on the national budget.

But how do you make a service that pulls in BILLIONS of dollars unprofitable in just a few years?

Well you tell them they have to put all their money into something ridiculous.

The GOP made a law that said that the USPS had to fully fund 75 YEARS worth of pensions in 10 years in a liquid account.

This means fully funded pensions for employees that haven't even been BORN yet.

Nobody ANYWHERE does this. Public or private sector.

NO ONE.

To make this understandable.

Imagine you've been paying rent on time for years. You have a good salary so your rent isn't even a quarter of your salary.

You are a model tenant. You always pay on time. You always pay in full.

But now the landlord wants you out.

The law in your area says that a landlord can only evict you if you fail to pay.

So the landlord writes into your lease renewal that this year, you have to pay 20 years worth of rent by the end of three months.

And if you don't, that counts as paying your rent late.

Even with your big salary, this is an absurd demand. You would have to clear out your life savings AND take out an enormous loan in order to get that done.

And guess who you legally have to take the loan from? That's right. The landlord.

This is what has happened to the USPS over the past decade.

They were forced to tie up over $100 Billion dollars of their money in an account just so they couldn't use it to operate and had to get government subsidies to survive.

The GOP has been working toward this moment in this election for YEARS.

Now, having installed a USPS hostile puppet as the Postmaster General, the GOP is fully dismantling the Postal Service to deprive Americans of both Life and Liberty in one fell swoop.

The entire GOP model of "governance" is to set critical things that you happen to be using on fire and then scream with alarm that using flaming things is unsafe and question why anyone would do such a thing.

The official argument for the current sabotage of the USPS is "cost cutting"

A highly efficient organization that rakes in billions doesn't NEED cost cutting measures.

It was working fine. The GOP is destroying it while claiming it's doing necessary maintenance
