Yesterday, @FAMMFoundation sent a letter to Pa's Board of Pardons encouraging them to reconsider past denials, as well as expand recommendation of #clemency to many more folks trapped in a system of unending incarceration.

Pa. has incredible mentors & leaders who make amazing contributions to their prison and home communities while serving unjust or excessive sentences.

Dennis & Lee Horton are two of those men, but were denied commutation in 2019. 2/9 https://bit.ly/2Oz6oy7
Many of PA’s sentencing laws support unending retribution & punishment without mercy as a counterbalance. This is not justice. Our leaders can & should do so much better.
With 2nd chances, people can do amazing things.

Just look at Naomi Blount. 3/9 https://bit.ly/2XwZ6zD
In December 2019, the Board denied mercy to a number of people who deserve to come home.

This was a devastating outcome.

Pa. is facing a massive budget deficit. Do we really need to keep spending $50k/yr or more to keep these folks locked away? 4/9 https://bit.ly/33siuS5
Look at Charles Brown, who was sentenced to #LWOP but given a #SecondChance after serving 36 years in prison. Charles is an incredible person, and he makes Pa. a much better place. 5/9 https://bit.ly/3kfXAM8
Pa. has a moral obligation to expand opportunities for people in prison to receive mercy. Our excessively punitive sentencing policies and ballooning prison population are a blight on our commonwealth. 6/9 https://bit.ly/3gxdcsa
Black people & people of color are targeted & disproportionately harmed by every aspect of our legal system, including our charging & sentencing policies. PA must address these harms, and the Board of Pardons has an opportunity to do so. 7/9 https://bit.ly/3eSfUXR
In Pa., Black people are sentenced to #LWOP at a rate 18x greater than white people. 65% of the people serving #LWOP sentences in PA are Black. The rate of #LWOP among Latinx folks in PA is 5x that of white people in PA. 8/9 https://bit.ly/2CZko1g
PA has a massive aging & ill prison population, growing from 6% to 22% of the overall pop. between ‘96 and now. Some have already served decades, enriching their prison communities & themselves & would be mentors & leaders at home with a #SecondChance. 9/9 https://bit.ly/3jyhp0y
