Get PR Done the NZ way

Many of us I’ve looked on enviously at New Zealand dynamic young Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the way she has handled the corona virus crisis.
Such a contrast to our corrupt and inept government.

But did you know that until recently New Zealand also had first past the post? And that campaigners got rid of it because they were sick of the poor quality governments it led to?

TUESDAY, 18 AUGUST 2020 FROM 20:45-22:30
Get PR Done are hosting a meeting with two NZ activists who explain how they achieved a change from First Past the Post to a Proportional Representation electoral system in 1993.
Learn how the New Zealand Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) voting system works and how PR has changed political culture in NZ.

Caroline Glass is the NZ Greens policy co-convener, Danna Glendining is an activist who was deeply involved in the MMP campaign in the 80's & early 90's.
In the New Zealand 2017 general election the conservative National Party won most seats with 56. However, Jacinda Ardern's Labour Party won 46 seats and then formed a coalition government with the Greens and the Nationalist New Zealand First party.
Ardern's government is generally seen as a breath of fresh air for the Left globally, and the New Zealand electoral system is one we can learn so many lessons from. New Zealand votes again in Sept. 2020.
