Goalkeeper tactics

It’s just one player, but in the end picking the right keeper could be the difference between reaching a top 10k finish and not.
In this thread I’ll take a look at the strategies you can use when choosing your goalkeepers

In this thread I’ll take a look at the strategies you can use when choosing your goalkeepers

Before we start, lets look at last seasons
goalies:
Pope, 170 p (4.5m)
Henderson, 160 p (4.5m)
Schmeichel 156 p (5.0m)
Patricio, 153 p (5.0m)
De Gea, 143 p (5.5m)
Dubrakva, 143 p (5.0m)
Guaita, 137 p (5.0m)
Foster, 137 p (5.0m)
Ryan, 135 p (4.5m)
Ederson, 133 p (6.0m)

Ederson, 133 p (6.0m)
8 of the 10 best goalkeepers had a starting price of 4.5 or 5.0m, showing great value.
More expensive keepers like Pickford and Kepa both ended up outside top 10. Alison probably would have made it in to that list if not for injuries, but then Ederson would have ended up on 11th

Looking at the stats from last season, starting with either Pope or Henderson obviously would have been a real bargain. Just spending 4.5m and getting those kind of points is amazing value.
But that was last season, so let’s take a look on how we can play in 2020/21!

I would say that there's three ways to think when you pick your keepers.
- Two cheaper keepers that both are playing (9.0-9.5m)
- A 4.5-5.0m keeper and the same teams second keeper. For example Ryan + Button (8.5-9.5m)
- Any starting goalkeeper and a 4.0 reserve (8.5-10.0m)

Pros & cons of having two cheaper keepers that are playing.
Pros: If one GK gets suspended or injured you will always have a keeper ready and won’t need to make an unnecessary transfer.
You can rotate between the two keepers depending on who has the best fixture in your opinion

The cheaper keepers also tend to get more save points and bonus points than the premium options
Cons: If you rotate between two keepers it will happen that the goalkeeper on your bench gets more points. And that will make you pissed, trust me

Pros and cons of having a 4.5-5.0m keeper and the same teams second keeper
Pros: You will save money if you go for really cheap options like Ryan+Button
If the first keeper gets injured, ill, suspended or gets benched, you will automatically have the second keeper in your team

Cons: You will only be able to have one more player from that team, which could be a shame if they play well and you want outfield options.
If the teams is playing really bad it won’t be to fun. For example Tim Krul only got 109 points this season in a poor Norwich team. But…

…in some cases patience is all you need with a team playing poor. Watfords Ben Foster started the season with 12 points in the first seven gameweeks, then he grabbed 34 points in the next five. And eventually he ended up with the sixth highest score out of all goalkeepers!
Pros and cons of having any starting GK and a 4.0m reserve
P.S. Bare in mind that with this strategy there is one cheap and one expensive way to play, depending on if you go for a 4.5/5.0 or a 5.5/6.0 starter.
So some of the pros and cons will sort of contradict each other.

Pros: If you pick a premium GK like Ederson/Alison, you can hopefully expect a good amount of clean sheets throughout the season.
But a cheaper starter will save you money and could still get you more points then a premium goalie, which the 19/20 season showed you.

Cons: Last season Ederson picked up three yellow cards early and got suspended one game. With a 4.0 reserve that means you’re without a goalie and will need to make an unnecessary transfer.
The same problem will occur if your GK gets injured, like Alison did in GW1 last season.

A disadvantage when it comes to premium keepers is that they usually don’t pick up as many extra points for saves and bonus points as GKs in teams with weaker defense.
Also picking a GK from teams like Man City, Man United & Liverpool means you can’t have three outfield players.

I understand that you can’t be worried about injuries and suspensions all the time. The set and forget-tactic could work all season without a problem!
But it’s worth mentioning the risk, since only six Premier League goalkeepers played every single minute of last season

I know that during the 19/20 season having Pope and Button for 8.5m would have worked all season long!
But keep in mind that next season could be different and you might have to spend more if you want the same kind of results

Extra factor:
Think about which defenders you want in your team. At the start of the season it might be smart to avoid the double-up with a GK+DEF from the same team. It might be too much of a risk.
If a team like Liverpool can’t be trusted, who can

That ends this thread about goalkeepers!
There is no right and wrong, I simply wanted to highlight the ways of picking goalkeepers.
Which strategy will you choose next season?
