Over the last 70 years the Conservatives have not only conserved but extended huge swathes of the socialist apparatus installed by the UK’s postwar hard left government. As a result, conservatism has taken the blame for socialism. This ongoing dynamic has been ruinous for the UK.
Our electoral choice has been two socialist parties: one that is regularly awarded power as a compensation for seeing its own stated ideology besmirched through being used as a front for socialism, the other an overtly socialist party that takes no responsibility for socialism.
It’s a terrible trap. The Tories have been tempted repeatedly by an illusory power - one that tarnishes conservatism itself while furthering the aims of socialism. Meanwhile, socialism itself has got off Scot free, as have the socialists who now dominate Britain’s institutions.
