Attending a public university in Nigeria is borderline hellfire. Even those of us who attended some of the best public Universities like Unilag still saw hell. From constant ASUU strikes to the lackadaisical attitude of lecturers toward students & whatnot.
I don’t know if the lecturers are naturally frustrated or it’s the lack of infrastructure, poor working environment and remuneration that is frustrating them. Maybe it’s even the workload, but why do students have to suffer for it all the time.
In Public Unis lecturers are gods. They do & undo without care nor caution. A few days ago I was speaking to a female student of Unilag who got slapped across the face by a male lecturer for questioning why she had a missing script when her name was clearly on the exam attendance
This reminded me of my own experiences while in School. Year 1, first semester I had an A in a Course, I know because the lecturer printed out the results and pasted on the board beside her office. When the result was uploaded online, they someone ommitted 8 of us from the list.
After all the back and forths to get everyone involved (Lecturer, Course advisor, CITS) to upload the results, I graduated 4 years later with that result still reflecting as N/A.
Or was it the countless times you’d write an exam and after cross checking with your notes afterwards you’d be sure of an A or at least a B, only to be awarded a D or E. When you confront the lecturer they ask you to thank God it wasn’t an F.
What we have in our Public Unis is not education at all, it’s pure undiluted suffering. Poor infrastructure, zero respect for human rights/dignity and constant victimization of students. We are all used to it, Parents, Students, Governments, Lecturers etc. The suffering continua.
