BIG Ofcom report on lockdown:
- We spent 40% of our day (that’s 45 hours a week!) watching TV and videos.
- We spent double the time watching Netflix and others than usual.
- Disney+ is now more popular than NOW TV (and is more popular than BBC iPlayer for kids)
- 16-34s watched even more streaming video, averaging two hours of streaming a day.
- 12 million people signed up a new streaming service during lockdown, 3 million having never done so before.
- Most popular streaming service: Netflix, then Amazon, then Disney+
But it was not just big for streamers:
- BBC, ITV, C4 etc briefly had highest broadcast viewing for more than six years in March.
- 82% of adults used BBC News services during lockdown week one.
- Some of the highest viewing figures in years for Boris and Queen Speeches
So in short...

The pandemic saw a huge increase to Netflix and Disney+.

Linear TV had a temporary boost for the news and entertainment but now faces cuts in budgets.

And our habits have changed, which is good for iPlayer but bad for the BBC and linear channels.
I think it’s rather a concern for the BBC that Disney+ is more popular than iPlayer for kids, which saw a fall from 26% to 22% during lockdown.
