okay so black people were never taught proper english as slaves therefore they resorted to changing up different english words and basically making our own way of talking which is now known as aave today. we have a long cultural history of assuming that whatever black people——
in america do is defective so when we use aave it’s looked down upon and we are called “ratchet” “ghetto” or people tend to say that it’s “bad english”. literally nobody wanted to teach aave, they wanted to use the native dialect of pre-literate children as a bridge to teach the-
standard dialect and to teach reading and writing. there is literally nothing wrong with aave but its just stigmatized for social and historical reasons, related to race, socioeconomic class, and prestige. and as we all know black people don’t have the privilege—-
that a lot of other people do due to racism so like i said before we are looked down upon for using a dialect that WE created and we get so much negative stigma for it. to those who still think it is somehow not valid, you are wrong, aave is part of black culture—
the whole dialect is extremely beautiful and such a huge part of a lot of black peoples dialect. now there’s a lot of controversy about who should and can say aave, i cannot speak for eveyone but i would like to share my opinions on it and educate you further as a black poc.
1. AAVE IS NOT A TREND
2. AAVE IS NOT TWITTER/TIKTOK LINGO
3. AAVE SHOULD NOT BE JOKED ABT
4. ^ AAVE IS NOT COMEDY

if you aren’t black i still feel as though it’s totally okay for you to use aave as long as you recognize that the whole dialect is apart of a communities CULTURE, apart of a culture that we aren’t sharing with you and allowing you to use. honestly black poc could be—-
gatekeeping the whole dialect if we really wanted to but we aren’t. also, don’t use aave “just because you can” and don’t overuse it either. if a black person tells you that you are overstepping your boundaries with the dialect then respect them—
you just really have to be careful with this type of thing because it’s really controversial and you can make lots of people uncomfortable (even if that wasn’t your intent) i’m gonna say it again but PLEASE remeber that aave is not a JOKE OR A TREND——
do not use it as ur comedy or just something to laugh at because it’s not funny. black people still get shit on today for using the lingo and so just be respectful with it, yk?? and honestly if you aren’t black and you can limit yourself to just not using it, then do.
you don’t need to use aave to be ‘cool’ or ‘trendy’ respect the culture
