Rebuilding Beirut will take at 5-7 years and I would roughly estimate 5-10 billion dollars needed for immediate rebuilding. China is keen on building ports. Watch that space.
Immediate problem is how to get enough supplies into Lebanon. Tripoli port can handle a tenth of Beirut. Cost of everything in Lebanon will soar. It is also physically impossible to get to Lebanon what it needs. Economic effects will be felt almost immediately across country
Only last month, Lebanese government discussed with China offers of help to build infrastructure including roads. No doubt the Lebanese government will be calling Beijing asking them to add the Beirut port to the shopping list. This could turn into China on the Eastern Med.
This is a report from last month about Lebanese officials discussing with China’s ambassador about China building a railway and tunnels in Lebanon. https://bit.ly/39UwzZV
The biggest loser is Hizbollah and the biggest beneficiary will be China. The geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East will be redrawn.
