So here is a little thread. Some time ago, City of Port Phillip started taking tentative steps towards offloading its childcare. They ran a 'consultation' in which residents overwhelmingly said they wanted council-run CC to remain under the auspices of local government.
But council made it very clear they were moving to do it anyway, using a ridiculous furphy of competitive neutrality, which has never even been tested. For fincl reasons. As soon as I was made aware of what was going on, I threw myself into fighting it. Shit got nasty. Anyhoo...
This memory came up in Facebook this week. It was originally posted by husbo. I was 8.995 months pregnant and giving a presentation on the importance of council-run childcare, especially to low-income earners, single mothers and Aboriginal families.
In the wake of the onset of the pandemic, the council finally realised the public interest in staying in childcare (the council-run childcare has the highest proportion of high need kids AND has some of the highest quality standards in the LGA).
They formally ran a public interest test, which in no surprise to anyone, the centres passed overwhelmingly. Council officers are recommending the council now move away from the possibility of exiting childcare. THE VOTE IS TONIGHT, friends.
Once it is passed🤞, I will be posting a pic of me drinking a VERY large Amaretto sour. Or 5.
If you're in Port Phillip and want to help me fight battles like this, I'm now involved w Progressive Port Phillip. Come check us out. https://www.progressiveportphillip.org/
