it’s adam yauch’s birthday today, which means it’s #mcaday! he would’ve been 56 today. i think today, in his honor, we should remember what an amazing person he is. he did so many great things. let’s start with tibetan independence movement, which yauch was apart of.
to support tibetan independence, a concert was held called the tibetan freedom concert in 1996. just a little background, the tibetan freedom concert was a concert held to support tibetan independence. the were actually held by beastie boys and the milarepa fund-
which was founded by yauch himself in 1994. the milarepa fund is a non-profit organization that was dedicated in supporting tibetan independence. the concert that the milarepa fund held for tibetan independence, were some of the biggest concerts since live aid.
yauch also spoke on how he did not believe in violence. at the vmas in 1998, yauch, in an acceptance speech, he talked about how the missile attacks in the middle east were wrong and called out the blatant racism from americans that are towards people in the middle east.
i think the thing i admire most about yauch is how he evolved as a person. from the person he was in 1987 during licensed to ill, to 1994 writing lyrics like “the disrespect to women has got to be through” are like completely different people. but, i think that’s what i admire.
it really does hurt me that he’s no longer here, and i do miss him. because it makes me wonder about the other amazing things he could’ve done. but then again, no one knows because yauch, in the words adam, is “a wildcard”.
but it’s nice to know that he used his platform to do so many things while he was still living. regardless, i think we were are all just so lucky to have him on this planet, because he truly was an amazing person.
