Change of pace for me tonight. I’m covering the North Portland protest. Peninsula Park is pretty chill right now. Kite stuff.
Poetry corner: @IwriteOK is reading poems from his phone while we wait for the marchers.
Marching east.
My bad. We’re totally walking west, as evidenced by that setting sun.
Marchers have arrived at the Portland Police Association building on N. Lombard, which is across the street from Heavenly Donuts. “Buy all the doughnuts!” a protester shouts.
The building is darkened and boarded up. If this were a movie, officers would burst out of next door building Hair Perfection in Dolly Parton wigs. Alas.
Alas
Okay dumpster fire is almost out. Light graffiti is up!
Lombard is fenced off at N Denver—because this movement and fencing. There are probably logistical reasons too, but undoubtedly anything that requires fencing gets on the board.
Sausages are almost ready at @RevRibs and “Snack Van 2” pulls up. But just then the PPB LRAD announces that people in the crowd are trying to break into the PPA building, “Stop now or you may be cited, arrested, or subject to use of force.”
“It appears people are trying to break info the Portland Police Association office.” Appears? Is that enough?
Haven’t been over there the whole time but I saw protesters knock. The knocking was forceful?
Protester walks up to the dumpster, its fire gone dormant, and throws a white claw can inside. I guess it’s still a dumpster.
Another announcement about people trying to break into the PPA. I haven’t seen people trying to break in or climb atop the building ???
A truck ran into the crowd. Everyone is confused and scared.
Hearing from a witness that the sparks in front of the truck are a motorbike.
Here’s the @oregonian confirmation of the motorbike and truck. https://twitter.com/oregonian/status/1290897669653581825?s=21 https://twitter.com/oregonian/status/1290897669653581825
Well the protesters don’t care about the PPA anymore.
Officers are out. After this they pushed protesters to N Denver and the North side of Lombard. Currently there’s a standoff on Lombard in front of Heavenly Donuts.
Officers withdrew to the east. After a moment, they approach from the west.
I thought officers were advancing but it was a crowd of people retreating allegedly from someone with the gun. I didn’t see the altercation because I had no desire to go anywhere near some guy with a gun.
Apologies for falling so behind on this thread. After the incident with the alleged gunman in front of the 7-11, things progressed quickly / I have terrible phone service in N Portland and couldn’t upload for a while. Here’s the rest of last night day 69 / this morning day 70:
