Decolonizing Medicine is recognizing that health equity was never part of the agenda of western medicine. The agenda was to keep Brown and Black people healthy enough to use our labor to extract wealth from our homelands as our lands were colonized. 1/n
Institutions of medicine were developed at the same time as colonialism ravaged the traditional ecologies & economies that kept us healthy for thousands of years, disrupting the balance we knew and unleashing pandemics that were unseen before this system came. 2/n
COVID is laying those fracture lines bare. Our suffering is built into every aspect of the architecture of western institutions. If we want #HealthEquity, we must decolonize. We must create a new culture & infrastructure that centers the healing of historic wounds, together. 3/n
This work cannot be led by white folks in settler nations. Settlers must dismantle their own false systems of supremacy, step down and cede power. This work must be led by those who have been most injured and continue to be injured by colonialism. Indigenous, Black, Brown. 4/n
While we all deeply suffer under these systems, it is necessary for BIPOC to awaken their voices and stories that have been silenced for a few centuries. Listening will help us all grow, because we all suffer in this system. This is the active edge of being alive. #Decolonize n/n
