okay so theology crash course since everyone wants to be on my ass: Pilate, the Roman governor was the one who “green-lit” the execution of Jesus because he was the ruling government body who could. He was not Jewish, but the role he played is much smaller than you think -
Pilate was not the one to bring up the charges against Jesus. This was Caiaphas who was essentially “head Jew in charge”. Caiaphas WAS Jewish, and felt threatened by the Jesus, and thought his authority was being challenged. He was pissed, and Passover was coming up -
Caiaphas wanted to maintain his status, and uphold the religious standards that had already been established in Judaism (but mostly status lol) So Caiaphas called a meeting of the high priests (which is portrayed in JCS, btw) and decided that Jesus must be killed -
Caiaphas sent the Temple guards (Jewish) to arrest Jesus, and Jesus was put on trial in the Roman high court. Caiaphas essentially rigged the trial, making himself chief judge AND prosecuter. his court declared Jesus guilty but did not have the power to order execution -
So Caiaphas had to bring the case to Pilate, and blasphemy against Judaism was not illegal so Caiaphas presented the case that Jesus had committed straight up treason. Pilate was uh, not convinced and he declared that Jesus was INNOCENT -
This caused unrest among the people who wanted Jesus killed (mostly Jews) and Pilate made the decision to go through with the execution anyways in order to save his ass and keep peace in his jurisdiction (which was essentially his one job) -
So in conclusion, the crucifixion is a pretty complicated event in theology. Jewish people DID kill Jesus, and there’s nothing wrong with saying that. Just recognize the difference between Jewish people killed Jesus, but not THE Jewish people. End thread.
