#24ssecondguessingdartmouth #justice4mahahasan #dartmouthdobetter (apologies in advance for the length of this thread, graphic credit to @kuzeydenizali) (1/?)
i was an early decision applicant to @dartmouth’s class of 2024. i fell head over heels for the school the minute i stepped on campus, and the day i was accepted was one of my happiest. i knew then, of course, that it was a flawed institution, as any institution is. (2/?)
these past few weeks, however, have taken away so much of my faith and hope in the 4 years that are ahead of me. the dartmouth administration’s treatment of maha has been disgusting, and leaves no doubt in my mind that dartmouth would rather protect abusers than help survivors.
the fact that maha had to go on a hunger strike to even get the school to consider opening an investigation in the first place is already appalling. but the school’s response throughout her hunger strike has been even more appalling.
the utter disrespect that’s been shown, not just for maha’s story, but for her very life, makes it very clear to me that the dartmouth administration is not interested in protecting or believing survivors. they are interested solely in money and reputation.
as a queer girl (here’s my coming out tweet as if it wasn’t already obvious lmao), a survivor myself, an incoming student who’s considering taking classes in the very cs department that failed maha, i have no reason to feel safe entering the place i’m supposed to feel at home.
dartmouth is on the verge of literally killing a student instead of investigating her sexual harassment allegations. why should i want to spend four years of my life living and learning at an institution whose administration behaves this way?
in the 24s groupme yesterday, dean hoyt told us that dartmouth “takes care of its people.” why am i expected to believe that when maha is being treated the way she is as we speak?
#dartmouthdobetter for maha, but also for all of your students, both present and future. we deserve better—we deserve to feel safe. #24ssecondguessingdartmouth #justiceformahahasan
adding to this thread that we aren’t allowed to bring pepper spray to campus. makes me feel VERY safe knowing if i used pepper spray on someone trying to assault me i’d probably face more punishment than the actual perpetrator ✹â˜ș
