Progressives who spend all of their time thinking they are educating the public by explaining how awful the Democrats are, while completely ignoring the clear fact that Trump is the truest enemy to progressivism, are engaged in an extremely counterintuitive endeavor. Here’s why.
It’s fair to point out that on many substantive issues, there is a gross amount of overlap between Republicans and Democrats. It’s fair to say that some of the differences are inconsequential.
Democrats can use nice rhetoric with no intention to follow through with it, while Republicans use disgusting rhetoric and very much want to follow through with it. I get that in many cases the outcomes in terms of human suffering are largely the same.
I also acknowledge that presidential elections are not the be all end all of American politics.
BUT, none of this excuses pretending that no differences between the parties exist. They do. And you can’t argue that who the president is has no impact. It does.
Does the Supreme Court have no impact on issues involving human rights? Environmental policy? How would you not rather have a president that we could get to sign progressive legislation over one who labels progressives terrorists?
Just saying “it’s broken, so fuck it” seems more nihilistic than humanistic. Voting third party for a candidate who can’t win is not idealistic, it’s a moral failing.
Why would someone planning to do so even bother to vote for progressive candidates at any level, if you’re essentially fine sending them on a doomed mission in terms of being able to accomplish any progressive goal?
It’s critically important to remove Trump from office.
One can understand that and that Democrats suck at the same time. I’d rather fight Democrats and support DSA representatives in Congress than have Trump, who is the more active enemy of progressivism, remain in power.
Biden, as much as you may righteously hate his former and current policies, must replace Trump. I’d rather fight against him after ending the current catastrophe. And it’s a catastrophe. I know America’s problems are not new or unique to Trump or Republicans in general.
Does police brutality happen under all administrations? Yeah. Will police still be police? Seems so. But can things get much, much worse under an enthusiastically fascist president who is immune from accountability? I think that’s been proven. Shit’s real bad.
Progressives have made progress within the Democratic Party. I don’t know about you, but I want representatives like AOC and Omar. Those victories are futile under a continued Trump presidency.
I’d really like to get back to complaining about Democratic hypocrisy, but I’d rather have that to fight against than this.
