i should explore why this bothers me?? well i’ll tell you the reasons why! first of all: oppa, unnie, dongseng, noona, sunbaenim, ETC, are korean FORMALITIES used in respect for older koreans. they aren’t something to mess around with JUST for kpop. you aren’t even in korea + https://twitter.com/oppahanseungwoo/status/1290833265939681283
neither are you korean. so why are you using those words in your vocabulary? second of all, the term “appropriation” is to take make one’s own. this belongs to THE KOREAN LANGUAGE, korean culture. the way MANY kpop fans use our formalities is not SUITABLE nor PROPER in any way+
therefore you are culturally appropriating. korea has culture and no korean is against one using korean. in fact, we like it when people learn abt the language and culture APPROPRIATELY. what we are against, is when people don’t respect our wishes and are more fetishizing.
so please go fucking educate your own ass. stop using our terms when it isn’t even appropriate. you don’t use these when you 1) aren’t korean. 2) aren’t in korea. there is NO NEED to use our formalities on stan twitter
fuck, international koreans first got pissed off when foreigners started using it, because they were using it inappropriately AND FETISHIZING IT FOR THEIR HALLYU FEVER. now actual koreans in korea caught on and EVERY KOREAN is tired of it.
we were so happy when people finally started to “appreciate” korea. but then we realized everyone just came in it for the “kpop”, pick and chose which korean they liked, as if we were on fucking display at korean build a bear workshop. and it’s sickening really when +
people don’t learn our culture and respect the boundaries. no korean is against someone learning korean. we’re against so many people using it wrong and inappropriately
