So here’s the thing about people sending their kids back to school:

I get it. I do. @OutNmbrdByBoys and I are very fortunate and very privileged that we can afford for her to stay at home and to provide laptops for 3 kids. Not everyone can do that.
Some families have a single parent. Or two working parents. They can’t stay home with their kids all day to do distance learning.

But they SHOULD be able to, because the government should be taxing billionaires and giant corporations and paying people to stay home.
Lots of school districts are trying their best in what amount to unprecedented times, but stiff thinking and mismanagement make for mistakes.

Our district made people choose two weeks BEFORE announcing school lunch and limited laptops were available for distance learning.
So some parents who needed their kid to get school lunch or didn’t have the financial resources to facilitate distance learning made an undoubtedly hard decision to send their kids back when they didn’t necessarily have to. And that sucks. I feel for families like that.
Even for us it’s going to be tough. All 3 of our kids are going to be in Zoom meetings at the same time, but one kid has weekly appointments for allergy shots, and I work. So when Mom takes one kid, she has to take them all. They’ll all “miss class” in the morning once a week.
And we are virtually the best-case scenario here.

And, sure, there are plenty of ignorant people out there who just... don’t seem to believe in the virus or don’t think it’s dangerous or don’t know enough about it to make informed decisions because they’re flooded with misinfo.
But this whole enterprise is fraught and — while I’m horribly dismayed to see hundreds of maskless students shoulder-to-shoulder in photo after photo — I can understand why *some* parents are left with little other option. A single mom of an two grade schoolers needs to work.
At least, she does in this country, even during a pandemic that’s killed over 150,000 of her fellow Americans.

And why?
