People of America: I’m proud to announce that @WCKitchen, in partnership with thousands of restaurants & volunteers, has served 25+ million meals since the start of the pandemic. From NY to Little Rock, Oakland to Navajo Nation – we’ve been fighting hunger from the frontlines. 1/
That’s 1 in 10 Americans going hungry. The Senate’s HEALS Act doesn’t contain a single dollar to feed hungry children, fund food banks & emergency meal programs, adequate SNAP increases. That's unacceptable. There are many ways Congress must lead in the fight against hunger.
I'm calling on @senatemajldr @SpeakerPelosi to pass a 15% increase to SNAP benefits, extend Pandemic EBT & fund food banks. @FeedingAmerica has seen a 50% increase in demand.

To not fund these efforts would be to let American families go hungry in a country with plenty of food.
The moment to act with urgency is NOW. Last week, Congress + White House let UI expire for millions of out of work families. Millions who were already struggling, and now may not know where their next meal is coming from. What ever happened to “for I was hungry and you fed me?”
We’ve already seen a collapse in the food supply chain. Rather than paying farmers to throw away produce, @USDA should purchase healthy food & distribute to food deserts – feeding the hungry + in the process keeping our food system functioning. A win-win. https://twitter.com/chefjoseandres/status/1255671337667919872?s=21 https://twitter.com/chefjoseandres/status/1255671337667919872
Too often, we excuse food insecurity as a logistics problem. That if we just had better distribution, we could get food to all who need it...

In reality, hunger is a political condition. We have the resources, the food, the tech. What we lack is the political will to end hunger.
To confront a deadly pandemic, America sends doctors and nurses. In the devastation of hurricanes and fires, we send first responders to protect and engineers to rebuild. And in the middle of a national hunger crisis, who better to send to feed the people than an army of cooks?
I’ve said it since the beginning: food security is national security. It’s peace in our streets, knowledge in our schools, health in our communities, prosperity in our fields. Our stability at home and our standing abroad. It’s our present and our future https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/22/opinion/restaurants-coronavirus-food-aid.html
Billions for excess defense spending & new FBI HQ, but not to feed the hungry?

In the words of President Eisenhower: Every gun that's made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
Right now in the richest country on earth, people are lining up 8 hrs for a meal. Kids are going to bed hungry while farmers are forced to throw away produce. Essential workers are risking their lives to feed America. @WCKitchen is here to feed them all http://wck.org/donate
We won’t let this happen. Go to http://act.wck.org  and contact your elected officials...write Congress a letter, call, tweet! RT this thread w/ the hashtag #FeedThePeople.

And join me in this pledge: Wherever there’s a fight so hungry people can eat, WE will be there. /end
