I wish someone had told me that being a Senior Engineer would involve so much reading and writing of docs.

Nothing wrong with it but had I known I would have spent more of my earlier career becoming a better writer.
Part of it is there isn't that unabashed euphoria you get from coding and solving a concrete problem. It's the "meta-work" kind of task that you can be really proud of but only retrospectively and after a few months.
I get it though. Every large or complex application we've ever heard of started in a doc somewhere and writing things down and discussing is how _real_ impact is made in any corporation.
