1) Y’all this fake indigenous woman created by white woman is so disgusting. I have been stuck on it for a few days. Talked to some of my other indigenous science folks and it is so damn gross. I have spent years!! Looking for and connecting with indigenous Astro/physics folx
2) to the best of our knowledge there are about 25 indigenous PhD Astro/physics folx and a handful of up and coming. It is a very lonely space to be a part of sometimes.
3) I’ve shared conference space with BethAnn and learned the extent of her crazy. To know that she created a fake indigenous scientist to somehow validate herself is o the same narcissistic level as 45. Shit is bananas
4) to take space away from actual indigenous professionals/scientists is the lowest of the low and really makes me feel physically sick.
5) we are real and we exist and our indigenous communities are being devastated by COVID so to then kill this fake person off by this same disease is traumatic.
6) also learning that she has won prestigious monetary awards is ... I don’t even have words. Shame on the awards cmtees for not doing the background checks. She should be prosecuted and fined and her funds so then be sent to indigenous communities for the utter disrespect
7) indigenous peoples are often presented in data with * to say our numbers are too small. We are systematically removed from data and as a result erased as if we don’t exist at all. Programs list us as underserved when in fact most Ed programs don’t serve us at all.
8) indigenous women and girls experience some of the highest rates of sexual violence. We have an epidemic of murdered and missing indigenous women and girls that rarely get media attention #MMIWG
9) this white women then decided to kill off this fake person as a way to insert herself into the pain that our communities feel. We have trauma from past diseases and genocide. We have trauma for the pain we feel about from our lost sistsers. And here she is centering herself.
10) I hope for the sake of all of us that BethAnn gets some serious help. I hope she is held accountable and pays her dues back to our indigenous communities. I hope she is forced to make a speaking round where she is consistently forced to center her shame in public ways.
11) but more importantly I hope our academic systems put sincere effort to create change to support BIPOC and BIWOC in our academic pursuits. This means changes in hiring/admission practices. Changes to our journal editors. Changes to our funding agencies (NSF and NIH).
12) changes to our tenure promotion practices. Changes to our curriculum so that we are not centering euro centric view points. Changes to awards/nomination committees. Changes to our levels of service requirements.
13) I’m so sick and tired of the phrase of the moment (DEI) and no action to support the words.
14) we exist. I’m tired of having to prove our existence in ways that are palatable for your blandness.
