I dont get the tears. Bare Black women tried to tell her and she wasnt havibg any of it, even the very succint and eloquently written one, she wasnt having it. Colorism didnt exist then because it doesnt negatively impact her https://twitter.com/writtenbyhanna/status/1290659619275264001
I remember it being a “look at the bitter darkskins complain” rather than understanding what and who Nina Simone stood for, and how that was muddied by taking a lightskin woman and blackfacing her rather than employ a Darkskin black woman.
Exhausting that it should take this many years for her to realise she could have leveraged and advocated for a more suitable actress to take on the role. NINA deserved better and so did the world...
Another perfect example of lightskin privilege in action. In zoes world at the time she truly believed her talent had the “range” and that no other (darkskin) woman posessed the talent to depict Mama Nina. So loud and so wrong!
Newsflash: most times you are not the best suited, most talented person for the job. The whites just find you “safer” due to your proximity to whiteness. They even created names to value you based on that proximity, and that should tell you all you need to know.
And in every industry, every nook and cranny of society around the world you will find Zoes, people with enough LS privilege to think they should occupy, colonise the Black experience. That they should gatekeep Darkskin women even from our own lived experiences
“Funfact” sweden has almost 400 000 afroswedes and out of that 30 000 identify as “mixed”. Now tell me how that minority came to be the “face of black sweden”. In media, in activism, in literature and much more. I have always since childhood wondered
Where are the women like me in Sweden? Why are we missing from our own narrative? Why are we only allowed to speak from a victims perspective never the victor and we are victors and survivors any given day. Where is our Black joy?
The answer is when White supremacy (in power) meets Colorism they have a ball at the expense of Darkskin people. The systems exists but are upheld on individual basis. And its painful. Nina was a solace to me at 13-25, her voice, her determination and craft is not 2 be taken light
@zoesaldana i am glad you “get it” now. I am not glad it took this long, nor am i glad you that at the time of discussion you used a tried and tired trope of the angry black/bitter woman against all and any that were truly acting in our collective best interests.
It shouldnt be this hard to listen to us especially if you are playing an icon who lived her truth&life as a Darkskin Black woman and everything that came with it to the day she passed. I hope you use your privilege to educate others so we dont have to continue this ish
