it& #39;s actually not "Yo-semite" or "Yo-seh-mi-tee" it& #39;s "Ahwahnee." the term "Yosemite" was actually an alternative name for the Ahwahnechee, an indigenous nation that lived in the valley. It was renamed "Yosemite" by the colonizers who forced the Ahwahnechee to leave.
there is something so insidious about colonizers renaming indigenous lands with another indigenous name because it is "euphonious" or suggestive of a perverted idea of "rugged wilderness"...it& #39;s still used to market stolen indigenous lands as tourist destinations globally...
or even "made up" indigenous names! a lot of minnesota place names "sound" like indigenous place names but were literally invented by colonizers to make it sound "unique"!!!
