I& #39;ve been thinking about cat tails for a while now.
It& #39;s strange to me that cats seem to be surprised by the movements of their own tails.
It would be like a human going "WHOA dude my hand just twitched, better catch it so it doesn& #39;t run away!"
Here& #39;s my current theory on it:

Tails, more than any other appendage - seem to reflect emotional state, in both cats and dogs.
Yet emotions are not under our direct, conscious control.
Our legs move when we choose to walk.
We do not choose when we are going to feel annoyance, or excited- not directly.
