These Championship possession sides are bobbins. Lump it to the CF and lay it off to Onamah/Benrahma to give them space to work with. It's an absolute myth that beautiful football = short passing. You need to do short, medium and long with variety.
I absolutely despise watching these back 3s in buildup take 1, 2, 3 touches and dribble a bit before passing. The opposition have settled positionally by then and the space has gone.
Touch, pass, move. Touch, pass, move. It should be rhythmic. No fucking around. Draw them out and waste no time with the pass.
The funny thing about this ideological obsession with sticking to the short game, is that line breaking made football more direct. Watch footy in the 2000s. Much more sideways passing.
Look at front 3s like Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho. They'll tell you that they're given full freedom. Football is about getting the best from your best players. Get the ball into your best players in space.
Someone like Sarri expects his front men to be positionally based. His attitude is system first. He would rather his team complete a few short passes, when one quick, longer pass will do. The system is the goal.
Liverpool lack midfield passing, but do this beautifully. Every fulcrum of their system is designed to get the ball into Mané, Firmino, Salah as soon as possible. They don't fuck around. When the ball in behind is on, it's on.
