Here is my take that no one has asked for on why @FantasyScotland has bounced back after a false start last season.
(And yes the EFL play-off final has been that boring so far that I have ended up doing this)

After a big build-up and launch last season, the Fantasy Football Scotland app was pulled after the first game week as it just did not work.
This allowed the SPFL’s own Fantasy Football game to be the only offering and take the market share.

Now this is no attack on the SPFL (there has been enough of that recently) however their game wasn’t as simple as the very popular FPL game.
The top prize was good though & there were plenty of reminders to get your team sorted via email & social during the season.

Fast forward to June 2020. The fixtures for the new Premiership season have been announced and the Fantasy Football Scotland game is back and their promotional work has been good.

Their strong uptake is helped by launching a month ahead of the official SPFL game. I would take an educated guess that the chances of the majority of players playing two Premiership Fantasy Football games is slim. There wasn’t any obvious sign of the SPFL version at this point.
I’m sure there would have been doubts about the reliability of the game again but when loading the app, the addition of “Powered by Opta” messaging will have helped as a trust signal even at a subconscious level.

One of the main differentiators between the official game and Fantasy Football Scotland is that FFS have followed a similar framework in terms of gameplay as the FPL which helps make new users already familiar with what they need to do. This goes as far as the same game chips.
The relaunch of the app & game was announced on social along with emails to those that had registered last year.
However where I believe a lot of their initial success has come from engaging high profile Scottish football websites, podcasts & profiles. Credibility on the up.

A quick look at the officially promoted leagues includes the likes of Pie & Bovril and The Terrace. Throw in the likes of Aberdeen, Celtic, Hibs & Rangers fans leagues and the promo for the app is already taking care of itself as these accounts tweet and talk about their leagues.
They also engaged professional players such as Declan Gallagher giving fans a chance to go head-to-head with them. Players that are playing the unofficial game as opposed to the SPFL version.
Again this adds to its credibility.

The FPL game has been around for years and over this time the content (official & unofficial) around it has grown significantly; to the point where it is discussed on 5 Live weekly, there is an abundance of official video content, podcasts and paid subscriptions for tips.

While we have been screaming out for a Fantasy Football in Scotland for years, this season probably sees it taken to the next level. FFS have recognised the need for ongoing discussion between gameweeks.

The creation of @FFS_Scout is clever as it can help players and follows something that is not uncommon down south.
English Fantasy Football websites also created content around the game tapping into a large audience of dedicated fantasy football players.

The engaging of podcasts is clever too with the best example being active discussion around Fantasy Football Scotland on The Totally Scottish Football Show.

It has been a perfect storm for Fantasy Football Scotland. SPFL launched their game days before the league starting giving FFS a MASSIVE head start. With FPL recently finished & the Scottish Premiership the only show in town, Scottish football & FFS have the spotlight.
