Lol, I’ll never forget the day my mom put her last employers in their place. Today marks the 1 year anniversary of her dismissal.

My mom worked as a domestic worker all her life. 2015 April she started working for Mevrou and Oom X. At first, the working conditions were “reasonable”. Her salary was R1600 p/m.
As time went by, she’d started working from 07h00 to 18h30/19h00. Most of the time when I left for work, she had already started hers and by the time I knocked off, she’d still be working.
This was Mon-Sun, public holiday or not. December when most would go home to spend time with their fam, it was war before she could be permitted to go on leave. When she’d get back to work, it was always tense because she’d “abandoned” them.
When she’d have to go to the hospital for her hypertension medication, it was always a mission. The only time they’d feel “okay” about it was when she’d leave in an ambulance or was admitted m.
The Mevrou was a bit schiz and bipolar, should she find a hair on her couch or be fighting with the Oom, she’d throw out her meds and break things. Is it 23h00? They didn’t care, they’d wake my queen up to go clean it up.
Anyway, fast forward to last year towards the end of July. My mom had to go back home to Schweizer-Reneke because there was a mix up with our stand number. She had told them and they’d permitted her to go Friday after work and obvi she’d have to be back by Sunday.
Sharp, mom gets to Schweizer late and the municipality was already closed. She calls Mevrou and Oom to tell them that it was already closed when she got there so she’s gonna go Monday morning and be back to Carletonville in the afternoon/evening. They understood.
Mom got back to the Ville that Monday evening after fixing the whole stand number issue. Tuesday morning she went into their house to start her usual work, Mevrou tells her that she mustn’t work and that the Oom said my mom must wait for him to get back he wants to talk to her.
Oom gets back from his work, and tells my mom she said 2 weeks to vacate their premises and she’s being dismissed. My mom called me and she was fuming! I told her to just move her things to my flat and she’d go live back at home when she was ready.
Baby girl said she’s taking them to CCMA. I don’t wanna lie, I didn’t think she was gonna win because nothing binded them together and I thought they would deny her period nje.
My queen won the case, Mevrou and Oom paid her her 3 months salary for dismissing her. They also paid her UIF for 9/10 months regardless of not registering her with the Labour Department.
