Please remember to check sources & verify information before boosting it.

A lot of speculation & rumours masquerade as facts in the immediate aftermath of disasters. Very little is actually known quickly because people on-scene are focused on life-safety not investigation.
Evergreen reminder:
If you’re not directly impacted or an official information source, STAY OFF DISASTER HASHTAGS.

Your thoughts, prayers, & musings are noise that buries vital communication. Stay quiet so people who are in danger can find info they need or call for help.
A LOT of graphic footage is coming out of Beirut. Reflect before boosting.

1. Some is current, but some of it is likely older events mislabelled & reposted.

2. Is it informative, or disaster porn exploiting suffering? What’s the motivation to share?

3. Make it easy to filter.
Using a double QT (QT of someone QTing a video tweet) makes it click-to-consent: people won’t see graphic media without warning.

Using keywords (but not the disaster hashtag!) enables filtering so someone can kerp their timeline clear if this is Too Much or traumatizing.
Fires are complicated. Explosions are really freaking complicated. And both in an urban settings where utilities, industrial storage, and undeclared hazmat all chaotically interact?

This is a mess, people are hurt, and the ones who can answer your questions are busy saving lives
Q: I don’t know enough to verify, but it sounds important!

A: If it’s outside your expertise & it’s not from a reliable source you trust (like a legit news agency with a solid history of reporting in Lebanon), don’t boost it.

Be a firebreak of viral fakes & rumours.
I know you want to help.

Please remember not everyone soliciting donations is legit, and not every aid organization is equal.

Best results are usually from preexisting community organizations with established local relationships & history, not internationals parachuting in.
