Really enjoyed @Zaiderr’s eBook „How to stop self sabotage“

Here are 10 lessons I deem most the important in order to build discipline in your life.

*THREAD*
#1 - Goals

In order take control of your actions.

You must know what you want to achieve.

Clarity of purpose is a destination you strive for.

Figure out your goals and your actions will align.
#2 - Values

Solidified values dictate your right and wrong.

Once you have your moral compass.

You know what actions bring you closer to the person you want to be.

If goals are the destination, standards are your map to it.
#3 – Identity

You can’t act differently to how you view yourself.

If you identify yourself as a smoker, you will smoke.

Define yourself as a person who does X.

Become the person who does X.

Practice positive affirmations.
#4 – Pain & Pleasure paradox

Your brain wants to avoid pain and seek pleasure.

Yet they are two sides of the same coin.

But your brain only perceives them in the present.

Inverting those two can help you do hard things.

This is where #5 comes in play.
#5 – The Order of Effects

What causes pleasure at first, causes pain later.

Burger tastes good but will make you fat and lethargic.

Training is hard but makes you look and feel good later.

Don’t look at the first effect.

Look beyond, into the future.
#6 – Vicious cycle

Bad habits feel good at first, that’s why you do them.

In the long run we now know it makes you feel bad.

What does one do when feeling bad?

Finds Immediate pleasure.

Beware of this vicious cycle!
#7 – The duality of self

There are 2 you’s:

- High-self (prefrontal cortex - reason).
- Low-self (amygdala - emotion).

Observe them through meditation and journaling.

This helps you gaining perspective on your cycles.

Don’t hate your low-self. Conquer it.
#8 – Cues

Identify cues to your bad habits.

Use them to alter your behaviour.

For every negative cue, have a positive action.

e. g. Don’t fap when you’re bored. Do 20 pushups instead.

By following this, you’ll eventually arrive where you want.
#9 - Cravings

It is easier to remove a little sprout than a tree.

Once your craving sets in, it causes an emotional reaction and action.

Don’t play with temptations. Don’t indulge in that thought.

If you identify something as destructive, avoid thinking about it at all costs.
#10 - Forgiveness

We are all human.

It takes time to change. You will relapse.

When it happens, don’t drag yourself down.

Don’t let your low-self win.

Forgive yourself and keep going.
