So FANDUBBING (A Thread) (1/9)
Working on fandubs by no means invalidates you as a person or an actor. It's wonderful practice and an introduction to the process of recording to picture, editing audio, editing video, and a bevy of other skills, as well as providing a great way to collaborate. (2/9)
And all sorts of pro voice actors of many levels have done it! I won't speak for anyone on their behalf, but I've done fandubs, and to my knowledge it has not hurt my position in the industry, wherever that may be. I've still gotten to work with a lot of cool people. (3/9)
The unfortunate nature of fandubs is, however, that you are, by majority, publishing a previously licensed work. Even though you've completely replaced the audio, if the picture is not transformed, the work is not protected. It's, unfortunately, not yours to share. (4/9)
And people who did fandubs previously and no longer do are not hypocrites or gatekeepers for speaking out against fandubs now, as much as they are scared of facing the consequences of publishing the fandubs they DID. (5/9)
THOSE fandubs are JUST AS ILLEGAL as any made now, and that DOES INCLUDE the dub from home challenge, and the 6 Characters to voice act thing, if you did it to picture. The pro VAs you saw participate in those things, if they recorded to picture, ARE FANDUBBING. (6/9)
Because fandubbing is FUN, and people WANT to do it! If fandubbing was suddenly legal, people would be gatekeeping THAT now (like they used to). People would be RACING to fandub new shows. (7/9)
But the effects are present. Konami has stated their disdain for LittleKuriboh. Toei has made their hate of TFS VERY clear. And TBS and Kadokawa have made it clear that there's a birch sapling growing in each of their rectums when it comes to distribution of their stuff. (8/9)
So TL;DR: Do your own thing, have fun, and don't worry about all the doom and gloom talk. Just be mindful of who owns whatever material you're working with, and how ornery they might be about you publishing it. (9/9, thank you for reading!!)
