i really dislike the word & #39;minority (even though it is technically true but life and culture is not a numbers game) and for the most part the people I hang with use other terms but since I am doing more school I occasionally come across ppl who use it and I am like *cringe*
In a culture where & #39;majority rule& #39; is a big deal, and implied & #39;might makes right& #39; ideology (in that it& #39;s not in the laws but it is in the dominant culture), using the word & #39;minority& #39; for groups of people is a little...telling, hahaha
It ALSO feeds into the very real ideology that if we become & #39;the majority,& #39; we are going to tear shit apart. Like, everything will be okay, as long as there is less of us.
If there is one person here from another country or a million: they should still be regarded as human, with basic human rights, that their culture is not less prestigious than the dominant one.
It definitely affects immigration reform, contributes to those terrible statements about birthrates among different ethnic groups. Since the fear is & #39;minorities who could become the majority https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😬" title="Grimasse schneidendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Grimasse schneidendes Gesicht">& #39;
if you& #39;re like, what word should I use instead :( well, I don& #39;t know, think about it for a minute and realize it will differ from situation to situation. Just like & #39;minority& #39; has meaning and implications in various situations, other words do as well. hello.
Like, who are you talking about, in relation to what, what are you trying to get across and does this word put agency/power or lack thereof where it needs to go in the context of what you& #39;re saying
Of course, you may have to fix your thinking to be able to do this, you may have to examine how you really feel about power and who deserves to be treated how, when. If you call me a minority, I will say, there is one of me and there is one of you in this conversation. Yeah?
