A guide to a successful season; A Thread

The aim of this thread is to serve as a guide to all FPL managers on twitter who intend to up their game and rank.

The thread is based on community input that I have acquired over the last month, and will include my views and lessons.
1) Setting up your team

@DonFantasy_FPL gave a great piece of advice, which includes initiating the season with a strong squad. This is very important for GW 1. Including a premium in all positions (Except GK) allows you to have the ability to have less risk......
but too gives you time to evaluate other lower valued players that may be showing signs of having a great season. Thus, it makes it easier to move these premium players to the other performers without destroying team structure or by taking hits.
2) Team Structure

A good start is half the work..

Top 100 manager's GW 1 structure follows a pattern.

Formations will vary amongst top managers but, typically the most used will be a 3-4-3, followed by 3-5-2.
GK: 4.5/4.0

My recommendation along with many others is to withstand with a budget keeper who plays in a defence minded team in which don't retain a majority of possession.

Keeping in mind that it takes a certain number of passes before players can enter into the BPS system
This number is 30 passes, so if a team doesn't pass much and prefer to stop what comes at them, then goalkeepers have much more of a chance of getting on the BPS system before other players do. By having even 1 save point it can attract bonus points. eg; Nick Pope 2019/20
The unfortunate truth will be, we won't expect Nick Pope to be at 4.5m this coming season, however options at 5.0 may be attractive such as lloris (TBC) or Dubravka (TBC). At 4.5 we may be limited to newly promoted teams, preseason and game launch will give us a better idea.
A spending suggestion after looking at top managers would be as follows;

GK: 4.5 ->5.0m
DEF: 18->20m
MID: 33->36m
FOR: 22->25m

Bench 18.5-> 19m

This all depends on the formations you will use
eg: 352 - More emphasis on midfield spend, 343- More spending on forwards.
3) PATIENCE!!

@fattfattygavgav suggests being patient and trusting your gut, and I couldn't agree more. waiting until press conferences have been concluded is the best time to confirm transfers. https://twitter.com/fattfattygavgav/status/1277958687051538433?s=20
@Red_Rose_FPL Strongly advises to stick to your plans.

We both fell victim to getting rid of Pope for Foster after the restart. Evidently It didn't go to plan for us.

Set and Forget means Set and Forget, "don't fall into the trap of removing them" https://twitter.com/Red_Rose_FPL/status/1277941836548628481?s=20
Treat all FT's as chips - They are mini WC's and are extremely valuable.

Top managers don't execute many hits and most bank a transfer each GW using 2 FT's the following and sometimes even burning one.

This emphasises more and more the concept of patience..
Holding certain players for given periods of time can be a challenge but patience needs to be stronger for the more superior priced players. They are priced that way for a reason. Realistically the likes of Salah Sterling and KDB won't blank in 4/5+ consecutive GWK's
So leave them. Whilst other players at lower brackets have a bigger tendency to be more explosive however, less consistent. Eg. Mahrez, Foden, Barnes, Willian.

By banking a transfer and having 2 every second GW, it gives a great chance to make a move for these sort of players.
My advice is to give these types of players no more than 3 games without returns,

But this differs for value and position.

Another strategy based on returns for making transfers that I have been intrigued by; https://twitter.com/FplMariner/status/1287564312047886336?s=20
4) Captaincy

The most important aspect of achieving a good GW score and ultimately staying within other top managers is consistent captain returns.

This has been of a debate between top managers, some like to find and captain explosive scores- this is more risky..
An excellent thread based on captaincy can be read here; https://twitter.com/lateriser12/status/1288374596358422528?s=20

@lateriser12 and I, benefited from captaining Sterling in the closing stages before the band-wagoners jumped on. I earned 104pts in 5GWk's from Sterling, 4 times (C) 1 blank (C) , 1 playing return
My advice is;
Always captain a superior priced player regardless of fixture (In form) over a good fixture lower ceiling player, more so midfielders

Lower ceiling Includes the likes of Jimenez and Rashford who didn't score more than 13 points all season Rashford (2) Jimenez (1).
My lesson comes from various blanks,
Jimenez v AVL 2pts, Vardy v BUR 0pts, Son v EVE -2pts

Captain consistent high ceiling, superior players like Salah, Sterling, KDB with chance of getting CS bonus and less punts on defenders and Callum Wilson's

Insert **Antonio v NOR** 😅
@thatfamousjimmy Gave great advice based on captaincy and hits; https://twitter.com/thatfamousjimmy/status/1277963886663090176?s=20
5) Chip Strategy
@FPL_LiverGirl explains that its vital to plan well and not to waste chips at early stages of the season;
https://twitter.com/FPL_LiverGirl/status/1277957405028958219?s=20

Top player @MagnusCarlsen used his 1st WC in GW 13 and even my rival who beat me used his during boxing day.
In my opinion, Using the wildcard anytime between GW13 and Christmas is optimal. This will set you up for the the second half of the season and using the team value that you have acquired to get the players that you really want and that you have a larger sample of data for.
My chip strategy is as follows;

WC2 - used pre chip usage and blanks, optimally used the GW before BB and large DGW

BB Largest DGW - Most effective chip, Field 15 DGW players

TC DGW for 1-2 teams

FH during largest blank

TIP Follow @BenCrellin for DGW and Blank predictions.
6) Don't always trust the community for decision making (Sorry guys)

@FPLGreatShout places their emphasis on this; https://twitter.com/FPLGreatShout/status/1277942909745143808?s=20

Like the Pope out for Foster, Mane TC DGW 30 mins 1 pointer, I feel I had been mislead, not always but your gut is powerful so trust it !
@FplSwe gives great advice on the confidence in your own decisions; https://twitter.com/FPL_Swe/status/1287079067611738112?s=20

This is above thread from @FplSwe is paramount to this discussion and check out swede's thread in entirety , Swede does great work and analysis regarding top managers.
7) Form over Fixtures and trust your Eye-Test

Nothing beats an eye test and watching games live, to see if players are going to go into a spell of good form / linking up well with others. XG and XGA can sometimes be flawed but self judgement is key.
I want to thank all who participated in giving me advice to create this thread. If any of this has proved to be useful please RT and follow if you haven't already. Don't be afraid to add more or to criticise as it is mostly opinion based.
Finally, I want to say that don't take this information as gospel, I am learning and am by no means a top manager, however I hope you learn a thing or two that can benefit you to completing a successful season of FPL.

Muchas Gracias
