This is starting in a few minutes, and i'm really looking forward to it! https://twitter.com/NHSat70/status/1288488943084855296
We’re starting off with an ice-breaker in the chat of “how would you describe the NHS in one word?” I’m intrigued to see what any of my followers would say for that?!
Dr Stephanie Snow is kicking off the event with a pre-recorded message about tonight’s event; and highlighting the importance of the contribution to the NHS from South Asian people. #SAHM
Unfortunately @BinitaKane can’t be with us tonight, but she has also recorded a message for us! Kane is the co-founder of South Asian Heritage Month. She is telling us about the history of her family, which is powerful and moving. #SAHM
Follow @SAHM_UK to find out more about what has been happening, and what is still to come! #SAHM
Rajan Madhok is talking to us about how he knew as a child that he would become a surgeon and move to England, which he did! He started off in the Shetland Islands and then moved around the UK. Eventually left surgery and moved into public health and medical management. #SAHM
Madhok retired in 2012, and next month will mark 40 years since he moved to the UK from India. He has been taking part in @NHSat70 as an interviewee, so we’ll all be able to hear his story! #SAHM
Madhok feels that hospitals have become very impersonal places and he misses the sense of camaraderie from when he was working; and has just shown us a wonderful photo from his youth! #SAHM
Next up we have @drsohailmunshi who has been telling us his family’s history and how difficult it was to access secondary education in India. And how his grandfather and mother both had to give up their educations because of unfortunate circumstances. #SAHM
Munshi grew up in England and has been telling us about the discrimination against him, including having to change his name to Steven at school, because that was apparently easier than Sohail 😒😒 #SAHM
I really like the anecdote about how his grandfather used to write him letters about the importance of education and of the NHS; and how this probably influenced his career choice. #SAHM
This has been such an enlightening conversation tonight! Getting to hear stories like this are why I’m always so pleased to be involved with @NHSat70 #SAHM
Oh, I’m so excited that Rajan Madhok is reading us one of his poems now! I’m always in awe at people’s creativity! The first ever @NHSat70 interview I did in Edinburgh involved the interviewee reading me some poetry he had written, and will always be special for me! #SAHM
Well done to @angw27 and @pdkmitchell for chairing tonight’s event! It’s been really great! 👏
