Follower recommendations are great because they can enhance your timeline + help creators grow their audience.

These recs can also lead to tunnel vision + a preference for a certain type of creator.

Thoughts on why we need more diversity in “must follow” threads (a thread) 👇
1/ These lists usually claim that you’ll learn a specific thing or expand your mind by following.

Some of the people on these lists are truly great.

But if we truly want to expand our minds, we should look outside the same 3 industry leaders to the next generation of creators.
2/ By following people with different views than your own, you learn + expand your mind.

How can I truly be the best in my work if I’m limiting myself to people living similarly to me?

Diversity in consumption matters because it helps us see beyond our own lived experiences.
3/ These lists are also great advocacy. When you’re listed, you usually gain new followers.

As someone on some of these lists, I can confirm it’s nice. But as an ally, I need to consider what that bump means for my next actions here.

What can I do to lift more people up?
4/ If you have any following, let alone a significant one, you have an opportunity. People will listen to what you have to say.

What are you going to do to build up the next voices of our industry?

What are you going to do to change the narrative?
5/ If we subscribe only to voices that sound + look like us, we limit our view on the world.

We limit the potential for our industry to grow.

Support Black + POC voices. Support LGBTQAI+ voices. Support Female voices. Support voices who do + do not sound like yours.
6/ If you’d like to change, start here + share your recs!
