since norlox didnt get in now i can divulge that their black flames is actually the manifestation of their memories they'd given to their Archdevil patron

the reason the flames have something akin to a subconscious will, as if a separate entity that can act independently of norlox's will as though it has a life of its own is BECAUSE it has had a life of its ownヾ(:3ﾉｼヾ)ﾉｼ

the flames itself is what remains of the human they once were in their past life - the last will left of one who was killed in a car accident... but was so relieved and happy as their consciousness faded to nothing that they died with a smile on their face.

the flames' desire to protect norlox that causes it to instantaneously set aflame anyone that touches norlox is an instinctive reaction caused by lingering memories of the past they had of always being hurt by others around them.

norlox naming their flame 'oz' was instinctive, it felt right to them. coincidentally it means strength, courage :3c they have no memories of this bc of the deal they made but the original colour of their flames was in fact, white.
