Freestyling is an art in itself. The ability to freestyle requires solid foundation & technique which J-Hope possesses, as well as strong musicality. Not all good dancers can freestyle, but those who freestyle well are by definition great dancers #방탄소년단제이홉 #제이홉 #JHope https://twitter.com/rogueforHSK/status/1290548609654468608
'Idols' are trained to execute choreographed group routines and freestyle is not emphasised. Within the K-pop context, many seem to have forgotten that dance is a part of hip-hop culture as much as rap is.
Street dance wasn't originally intended to be performed on stage with set choreo; it happened in the form of battles. It's a form of self-expression, and J-Hope had to dial that back to achieve unity in group performances.
He impresses me with his continued dedication to practising that old-school style on his own, even when it's not directly applicable to his work. Through Hope on the Street he documents his growth and each time he surprises me with new elements and styles.
On a last note, I truly hope that we get to see J-Hope/Jung Hoseok the street dancer in a special project some day, using his freestyle skills to great effect.
