Been seeing a lot of ‘05-‘10 DIY nostalgia recently which means there are probably some media pieces in the works. Can’t wait to see what sort of revisionist, unifying intent/narrative we get. I tried to think back on the 2008 DIY scene and this is what came to mind... 
Standing in the dirty basement of a dirty house eating half a bag of dumpstered Trader Joe’s cashews someone offered me before they say “By the way, I checked the serial number on those so I’m almost positive those aren’t the batch with salmonella!” ...
Four bands on the bill. Two of them sound exactly like Black Flag but totally different eras of Black Flag. One of the bands is a pop punk band called The Fart Friends or something like that. Opening act is a guy with 1980s glasses wearing only tighty whities ...
He’s playing backing tracks off a laptop and singing through a broken karaoke machine. He’s probably got snot in his mustache. Two to five bike punx are in the backyard discussing a riot in Greece or France.
Person running the gig absolutely confounds a drunk kid who won’t pay the $5 for the touring band by saying “If you don’t have any money how did you buy that beer?” The kid is visibly dazed by the logic and then asks if they can pay with campus bucks from the local college.
You remember it your way, I’ll remember it my way. In all sincerity, it was an absolutely amazing time to be involved in DIY music culture.
