Why refereeing is harder then it looks, from a referee. [A thread]
1. We can’t change our decision. We are basically forced to stick with whatever initial decision we made even if we realize it’s wrong and even if it could completely change the game.
2. We have to constantly fake being confident. “Fake it till you make it” Is basically a referees catchphrase and even if you know you made a bad call, you’re taught to defend it with as much reason as you can come up with. So even if a ref seems confident, they may not be.
3. We have so many things in our head at once. We constantly have to scan the whole field, try to see if players are offside, deal with fans and managers, and keep a very close eye on the ball and who touched it last.
4. Referees get Abused, ALOT. Every year in my city, loads more refs quit due to verbal abuse. I’ve been called pretty much every name by managers and fans after making bad calls, it’s not fun.
5. Sometimes we have to do all our pregame stuff in as little as 10 minutes.
In tournaments there’s sometimes very short windows between games. Well have to verify team sheets, give a speech, do equipment checks, inspect the field and do a coin toss all in 10 minutes.

6. Little kids suck...
Whenever you refeeee 9 or 10 year olds, you just realize how bad they are. They don’t know how to take a damn throw in to save their life, can’t take goal kicks, don’t know how kick offs work and I’ve even witnessed a 9 year old fist fight.

7. Offsides are impossible to call.
Maybe at a higher level, refs get linesmen. But at my level, we have to basically make total guesses about whether a player is on or not. It’s often impossible to tell from your angle on the field.

8. Making calls instantaneously is wayyyy harder then it looks.
If you don’t have a great view of the ball, and a player falls down in the box, you basically have to decide what to do in a matter of milliseconds. On top of that, people will be mad either way most likely.
