Two summers ago today, I wished Scott Van Pelt a happy birthday from the @SportsCenter account. It is not his birthday.

A thread:
I was interning with the social media team at ESPN in 2018, and stumbled across a tweet from a fairly high-up PR person from the company. He was wishing SVP a happy birthday.
I thought it would be fun to join in on the celebration, so we did. https://twitter.com/sportscenter/status/1025749813030264832">https://twitter.com/sportscen...
SVP replied, insisting it was not his birthday.

But EVERYTHING on the internet pointed to his birthday being August 4th.

We assumed that SVP just didn’t want people to know he was a year older, and was joking. https://twitter.com/notthefakesvp/status/1025750841104498690">https://twitter.com/notthefak...
Soon after, he began to reply to other folks wishing him a happy birthday, with similar responses. @PFTCommenter included. https://twitter.com/notthefakesvp/status/1025756674039140352">https://twitter.com/notthefak...
In a panic, we messaged SVP from the ESPN account, asking if it was his birthday and apologizing if it was not.
As it would turn out, August 4th is not Scott Van Pelt’s birthday.
