Tonight there’s a wild anti corruption movie coming out on HBO, The Swamp. I have only seen a handful of scenes but it is intense, fascinating, must watch. #TheSwamp
It goes deep deep into fundraising in DC, how it works, how the parties use it for discipline and rewards, following three Republicans (Gaetz, Massie, Buck). They are not heroes (though they think they are, especially Gaetz).
But we also see Ro Khanna, Sarbanes, Katie Hill, anticorruption warriors I adore. Larry Lessig slicing it up. You have to watch it. I t is just more inside, in the culture, than other movies on this.
we need to keep building an anticorruption movement for HR1, publicly financed elections with matching funds and voting rights. And that means getting people together who can’t stand each other on other issues.
There are some crazy alliances—Massie and Barbara Lee on AUMF, Ro has obviously been incredible on building alliances on war powers too (Yemen leadership). But if we don’t deal with the money part and the way it coils people in, it’s so hard to achieve power for genuine good.
There are some pretty intense details about how power operates, made vivid. We have to stop allowing big corporations to govern via party leadership that uses fundraising as a stepladder to power. I love Bernie, AOC, others
...who have shown you can races and build power outside this corrupt system, but the overall structure is designed against there being more than a few who can do that.
Corporations have way too much power, and we need to strike at the root of it and break it up.
Oh, and these filmmakers made Get Me Roger Stone! (Also must watch). @morganpehme
