a THREAD: I couldn& #39;t sleep last night because of the Lindblom SRO vote. I am angry and disappointed that it came down to adults going against what the students want. Our student rep voted no, & still adult after adult made the argument that they know what is best for students.
Even worse, there was so much opportunity to learn before the vote. Last week, a student invited every ALSC member to our SRO out of Lindblom workshop. You know who showed up? The teacher rep, the student rep, and the advocates (who abstained last night). No parents/principal.
The theme of the night? Safety. We need it bc we need to keep students safe. If that is your argument, then I challenge you to reflect on what it is that makes you feel safe. A guy with a gun that works in a system rifled with systemic abuse of power?
So much abuse of power that they have a consent decree that outlines a number of reforms (most of which they are behind on actually implementing/haven& #39;t implemented)? So much that I have mandated curriculum to teach about their torture and systemic abuse in my history classes?
Is that what makes y& #39;all feel safe? Because what makes me feel safe is food security, clean water, safe & affordable housing, access to mental health, access to a good education, people that love me, and my animals. I could keep going, but I think you get the point.
Historically, it is students who have led the way when real change has happened. We are living in that moment right now. When are people going to decide to be on the right side of history?
