Long before Photoshop and other tech wizardry; if a photographer wanted a caption, on his photo he had to employ the services of the local Captionman.

Thankfully things got a bit more legible in the Inter War years thanks to the invention of the A-board.

It’s arrival also meant Captionmen could move quicker, and so get in more shots, than they’d been able to do when in the previously favoured blackboard suit
The downside to this process is that we remain completely uncertain of the events and circumstances that surround any photograph taken in the rain.

There were various attempts at introducing canopies to the A boards, but Captionmen were heavily unionised and it never got through
