One thing we don't talk about enough is the experience of being a POC (but particularly if you are black) and having to teach others about racism. The process isnt easy, there is a dance to it but often this dance puts the needs of a white audience before the needs of the speaker
We need to move away from this idea we are benign when it comes to racism. No. What I'm currently seeing is we are happy creating policies & releasing statements about racism but not unpicking our own, or able tolerate feedback so no this is not benign. It is performative
And without that genuine understanding or the ability to tolerate feedback from those most impacted, the performance is damaging and exactly how power maintains itself. The person providing feedback becomes the 'abuser' not the system/ person actually abusing
