I want to talk about the current ark of Beastars so just keep scrolling (Mild Spoilers)
At there are 3 stories happening at the moment:
A: Legosi being an anime protag fighting a big ol’ anime villain.
B: Friend character trying to get from point A to B.
And C...
The C plot is Yahya dealing with the city and it’s what I really want to talk about because it feels like it’s actually the most important yet hasn’t been getting the same treatment.
The city of Beastars feels like it’s on the verge of falling apart on a normal day with Carnivores giving into their desire for meat and treating herbivores as subhuman and herbivores being understandably terrified and angry at carnivores. Some form of civil unrest was certain.
A character goes on live tv and says that it’s ok for carnivores to eat meat, the city devolves into a race riot. The worst possible thing that can happen has happened.
However, something very important amongst the chaos. The carnivores are refusing to use their claws and fangs.
A race riot is in full swing but even when the city is at its worst its citizens are still trying their best. And the main purpose of this chapter is to show the difference between the adult generation and that of Cherryton High as the students are fairing much better than adults
The City is in chaos. Yahya sees decades of work erased in a matter of moments. All of a sudden a city wide blackout strikes. Murders are common during blackouts as herbivores can’t see in the dark yet carnivores can. The worst possible thing happens during a worse case scenario.
The chaotic city falls silent in a instant. All the herbivores are easy prey for carnivores who have seemingly lost all reason to hold back. Yet not a soul dares to move. (Honestly, this panel is a fantastic visual metaphor.)
Soon the lights return. (Probably were out for less than 2 minutes) We see the carnivores have slaughtered anyone. In fact, almost instinctively, we see that they have all joined hands with herbivores. As if their initial instinct is not to prey upon the weak, but to defend them.
The worst possible thing happened during the worst case scenario and they didn’t fall apart, but came together. Something that just hit me hard, especially in the current climate. But the main reason for this thread is cause I feel like I gave this more weight than the manga did.
I’m not saying that the manga did this badly. It did it fine. But it feels like the singular most important event of the entire series and It’s the C story that was wrapped up in less than 4 chapters.
