Why I love Rantaro Amami; A thread
1. His design. First of all, it may come off fairly obvious he’s a ‘pretty boy’ with a ‘playboy look’. Though this isn’t what I’m talking about. His appearance as an Ultimate Adventuerer sort’ve shows in it. His symbol looking similar to a compass and jewelry that
he could’ve gotten in foreign places (his bracelets specifically). Though his ‘ultimate ???’ talent is also kept true, and left people guessing for awhile. The bagginess of his clothes is rare among Danganronpa character’s, unless you’re referring to Nagito’s jacket.
2. Personality. He’s just an overall unique guy who blends in, but trying his best to help out. The first time you meet him his first flaw slips right by most people. He second guesses and undermines himself a lot, and seems to be easily scared by not knowing his situation.
How so? Think back to his Survivor’s Perk. The details of it, he telling himself not to trust anyone and to watch his back. Layered with his already present Survivor’s Syndrome (I’ll get into it later), it probably scared him to death. But Amami is anything but self-centered.
He cares about those around him, thus keeps himself from avoiding people. He uses his perk to try and save everybody rather than just using it for himself to plan a murder. Granted this could’ve been from distrust due to the message, but remember he got a group of people to go-
with him to the library. He trusted them enough to protect him if he was in danger, so clearly he sees people in a friendly and trusting manner. Obviously he believes in people, had it not been the message to himself he could’ve maybe been a protagonist.
Now to the real juice in this apple. The thing I adore most about him is how kind and patient he is. With people like Ouma or Iruma he’s relaxed and reasonable, on the contrary to Saihara who gets confused or Momota who gets ticked off. Amami just deals with annoying people-
better than anyone else. Which opens a lot of windows of opportunity for his ability to make friends. And as an annoying person I will gladly say I wish I had somebody like Amami Rantaro in my life. Not to mention how supportive he usually is, how supportive he tries to be.
He’s trying his best to be the most reliable person he can be, and for that he’s extremely selfless. But not annoyingly or as naively on the contrary to characters like Akamatsu or Momota. Amami seems like he could give good but also realistic advise to somebody who’s struggling.
3. Character depth. His backstory may seem like a shoulder shrug or silly to you granted he had 12 sisters. But if you take a moment to think about his dialogue and general character, it’s easy to peice together how strong and resilient of a person he’s become because of the way-
he was raised. His father most likely was very unfaithful or got divorced a lot, judging on the amount of sisters and the fact he mentions most are step or half sisters. This also means as the oldest, he didn’t have much of anyone to rely on. His father being unfaithful most-
likely wasn’t somebody Amami trusted in his life. And since his father got custody (see attached) his mother wasn’t a person he could lean on often if at all. He was alone, and had to grow up quickly and independently. Not to mention being a support for his sisters.
His sisters were the only people he had in his life at the time. The friends he had were none to minimal given he dropped out to travel the world. His little sisters were the only people he had, and through no fault of his own they disappeared without a trace one by one.
Can you imagine how painful that was for him? He only started traveling 15 or 16, so he lost them in the span of 1-2 years. I headcanon he got Survivor’s Syndrome from this, given he was the only one of his father’s kids left.
Amami had nobody he could trust left in his life, and he probably presumed it was because of him doing what he enjoyed. He blames it on himself openly to Saihara, can you imagine the guilt of losing your entire family because of yourself?
Despite his insanely terrible family issues, he still manages to give a friendly smile and openly support others without a shoulder to lean on himself. Now with this in mind, put him in a situation where he’s restricted by ‘himself’ from trusting anyone else?
Amami’s life was almost but the feeling of trapped in loneliness with nobody he could trust. His escape was traveling, but through that he lost the only people he trusted in his life. I want to give him a hug.
Conclusion: Amami is an amazing and selfless person who deserves to feel like he can depend on somebody without the fear of losing them. He’s done nothing but support those around him despite the amount of shit he’s gone through, he deserves better.
